Does Your Hair Need Sunscreen?

July 17, 2019

Does my hair need sunscreen?

This is a question we hear all the time. Especially once summer hits and the sun is shining in full force. The simple answer to the questions is: no. Yup, your hair strands (aka hair shaft) are not made of living cells, therefore will not "burn" like your skin. However, ultra-violet (UV) rays can be quite damaging to your locks. Just as your curtains could fade in the sun, your hair color and its condition are affected by prolonged UV exposure. On another note, your scalp certainly is subject to sun damage, and while pretty tough, it is still at risk for skin cancer. But, no need to stay inside all summer long! There are simple steps you can take to protect your hair and scalp and still enjoy having fun in the sun.

Wear a Hat

One of the best solutions to protect your hair and scalp from the sun: a hat. Whether it be a fanciful wide-brimmed hat or a functional baseball cap, hats that cover your head entirely offer the ultimate solution.  While visors may subsequently shade your eyes, they leave your head and hair exposed. Many sunhats even have UV protection rating like sunglasses!

Apply Sunscreen When Your Hair is Wet

Once you are out of the shower, or after you get out of the pool, apply the product in your part line. After you rub it in, gently comb thru. Using when your hair is wet may help the sunscreen to absorb into your scalp, plus it won't make dry hair sticky or stiff.

Put Your Hair Up

When you pull your hair into a messy bun, you are already helping to protect your hair and scalp from the sun's damaging rays. Here are our suggestions, use damage-free hair clips and scrunchies. That way, you protect your scalp and prevent breakage. Also, consider applying sunscreen to your scalp, conditioners to your hair, gently combing thru, then either braiding or securing in a loose top knot. The result is both stylish and sun-smart!

Use Hair Products with UV Filters

As we said earlier, scientifically speaking because the hair shaft is not made of living cells UV rays will not burn it like your skin. But, UV rays will cause a myriad of other problems to the condition of your hair. Prolonged exposure lightens natural hair color and fades color treated hair. Too much sunlight causes hair to become brittle, resulting in split ends and breakage.  Combat these issues by always using products that contain UV filters. Look for ones containing moisturizing ingredients such as argan, coconut, or sunflower seed oils.  Not only will these reduce and control frizz, but they apply nutrients to the shaft and a leave healthy shine. Keep Your Locks Lush All Summer Long!
